Day 7 – last show of the week!

July 30 – Private Show, Williamsburg, KS

Drove 10 hours straight to play this show for pre-teens and teens at a summer camp outside of KC. Enthusiastic crowd to say the least. πŸ™‚

After:

(had to drop the B.O.D.s quickly for a song changeover – one fell off of the riser and under the stage so I had to crawl down and get it haha)

Day 6

July 29- The Loft, Colorado Springs, CO

Ahhh, back indoors and cool A/C. This was more of a listening room so I leaned heavily on the B.O.D.s for this 80 minute set.

After:

Tried to get a solo shot of the B.O.D.s so you can see how they’re holding up. And again, the sticks are great.

Day 4 & 5 pt.2

July 27 & 28, 2012 – Oyster Ridge Music Festival, Kemmerer, WY

Our Saturday set was from 6-8pm so a little cooler and with more of an evening vibe.

I forgot to take a before pic but here’s the after. B.O.D.s held up today and the sticks are openly mocking me with their strength and durability.

Day 4 & 5 pt.1

July 27 & 28, 2012 – Oyster Ridge Music Festival, Kemmerer, WY

We love to play this festival and always have a blast. We did two 90 minute sets, one on Friday and the other on Saturday.

Before (Friday – it was hot and dry so the Gatorade was a necessity!):

After (Friday):

OK, the B.O.D.s are taking a beating. I use them mostly on shuffles but we do one tune that’s 15 minutes long, pretty fast and goes from pp to fff. Rimshots are going to do some damage. And not to sound like a broken record but the sticks are showing very little signs of wear other than a little denting. Still no wood chips, splinters or cracks. Also, the finish on the sticks seemed to help me hold on to the sticks when the hands got sweaty. Haven’t dropped a stick all week actually.

Day 3

July 26: The Walnut Room, Denver CO.

We’ve played here a few times now and one thing we know is that the stage is very dry – curtains and carpet mean sound doesn’t carry so much on this stage but it’s best not to overplay. We just let the PA do its job.

After:

20120802-204351.jpg

I did lose another rod on the B.O.D.s but the sticks are holding up really well. No chips or cracks anywhere to be seen.

Day 2

July 25, 2012 – Sidedoor Lounge, Omaha NE

Here’s pics from day 2

Before:

And after :

20120726-211305.jpg

The sticks are still holding up very well and no chips or cracks whatsoever. The B.O.D.s are holding up pretty well. I did crack off one of the rods but in their defense we played a shuffle heavy set yesterday and I was really working them out on the snare. Also, everyone in the band commented on how great they sound.

Tonight we’re in Denver at the Walnut Room – it’s a very dry stage so I’ll no doubt be hitting a little bit harder… πŸ™‚

Day 1

July 24 2012: CSPS – Cedar Rapids, IA

This is what I started out with for show #1:

And this is after a 1 hour and 15 minute set:

20120725-100920.jpg

So far so good. No broken sticks, a few dimples and the mallets gave up a little dust on the cymbals but overall it was a good day one. Also, it was a very hot show and the finish on the sticks made it easy to keep them in my sweaty hands – no drops!

Experiments in Drumsticking

Lately I’ve been noticing that my selection of sticks and “rods” haven’t been lasting as long. Sticks used to dimple and chip but you could get some substantial life out of them. My recent experience is that they just crack and break.

So, I thought I’d try out some SilverFox sticks. Due to their individual hand finishing approach.

From their website:

Most important to the player is the finish on the drumstick. And while other manufacturers finish their drumsticks in bulk tumblers using ordinary lacquer, SilverFox drumsticks are individually hand-finished using Duracrylxβ„’, an exclusive formulation that is harder than lacquer and makes your SilverFox sticks LAST LONGER!

So, let’s see if this works. I picked up a half brick of the Bopmaster stick and a pair of B.O.D.s and I’ve got a week of shows. I’m going to document the process here and via social media and at the end of the run we’ll see if I’ve found myself a new stick company. πŸ™‚

Disclaimer: I do not work for nor have I been paid by anyone to do this experiment. Aside from the occasional Twitter conversation I have not been contacted by SilverFox or any other entity to promote their product. I bought the sticks at retail price from their online website and the product was shipped to my home, opened and then put in my stick bag. No tricks or special/enhanced products are being used.

COLD WAVES: THE JAMIE DUFFY MEMORIAL CONCERT
Jamie Duffy 1973-2012

Some of Industrial Music’s finest musicans will perform as a collective at Bottom Lounge in Chicago on Friday, Sepetmber 7th, 2012 to celebrate the life of Jamie Duffy, who passed away on June 21st of this year

Having become an integral part of the local Chicago Music scene, Jamie Duffy worked at such notable live concert venues such as the House of Blues, Cubby Bear, Cabaret Metro and more as a stage manager and also sound man. He learned to perfect his craft at Chicago’s infamous Chicago Trax where he provided technical support and engineering on albums by Chicago’s very own Ministry, Sister Machine Gun, Chris Connelly, Sister Soleil, Method Man and more

In addition to being a sound engineer and producer, Jamie was also well known across Industrial Music’s landscape for his contributions as a member of the Coldwave/Metal hybrid band, Acumen Nation and the Drum and Bass project, Dj? Acucrack.

Jamie Duffy’s contribution to the Metal and Industrial genres crosses over from releases on major record labels such as Warner Bros. Records and RCA records, to large independents such as WaxTrax!Records, to the smaller independent labels such as Invisible, Underground Inc, CrackNation records, WTII Records, Fifth Column records and Metropolis records

If unknown by the wider record buying and concert going public, Jamie Duffy was recognised by his musical peers as one of the greatest stage managers and sound men that Chicago has seen, not too mention his technical and production skills on some very influential albums. Jamie is survived by his mother Patricia Duffy

Friday September 7th’s concert starts at 7pm (tickets $20-$50), finishing around 1am with all proceeds going to assist Jamie Duffy’s family with funeral costs. Paying tribute to this great man will be several of Jamie Duffy’s peers and friends with whom he produced, remixed, engineered or just plain influenced. An all star cast including such well known names of the industrial genre includes Paul Barker, Chris Connelly, Jared Louche, Martins Atkins, Steven Seibold, Jim Marcus, Jason Novak, Eric Powell will be performing selections of songs by their bands; Revco, Chemlab, 16volt, Acumen Nation, Damage Manual, Hate Dept., Claypeople, Go Fight/Die Warzau and more , while finishing with an all star jam worthy to pay their respect to this great man.

Double Drumming!

Well how about this? Good pal Victor DeLorenzo (do I really have to tell you that he’s the drummer extraordinaire with 1913 and Violent Femmes) has agreed to join Mike Mangione & The Union for BOTH shows tomorrow at the Steel Bridge Song Fest.

“Steel Bridge”, as we vets call it, is a very collaborative event. Many jams occur both on and off stage during the week, songwriting workshops are the norm and even a few MMTU songs were first conceived up there in Sturgeon Bay.

Still, I can’t believe how lucky I feel and how happy I am that I get to share the drum duties with Victor twice in the same day. His wizardry will no doubt leave me mystified and I’m gonna burst out laughing if he pulls out an air drum fill like I’ve seen him do in the past.

Please dear friends, take lots of pics and videos for me because I’m sure it’s going to be a blur.

(and did I ever tell you about the time a 17 year old Nez went to see the Violent Femmes and was awestruck by the tranceaphone? Well, that’s a story for another time…)
