Let’s Play Some Shows!

sunshine_on_my_cymbals_sos2013

Well now – this is more like it!

Finally shaking off the dust (and the endless winter) and getting back to playing some drums – sunshine on my cymbals and various festival foods/regional beers in my tummy. I’m not taking my talents to South Beach but I am working with some wonderful new folks, having a lot of fun learning new songs and reconnecting with old ones.

Here’s a hint – one of the shows is on a spooky day in June….

Summerfest!

MMTU at SummerfestOne of the best summer festivals in the whole world just happens to take place in Milwaukee, and we had the pleasure of playing it again recently on the newly named “Johnson Controls World Stage”. Also, sponsored by our pals at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, this stage is a blast to play. I used the provided backline kit (Thanks Cascio Interstate Music!) which was a tangerine sparkle DW Maple/Mahogany kit with 12/16/22 and a 5x 14 snare plus my usual set of Sabian cymbals.

We got a great review of the show that you can read here:

Well, Hello 2013!

Breaks are nice, aren’t they?

We ended 2012 with some great shows, including a nice arctic adventure with our pals in Field Report up in dreamy Minnesota, we rode out (part of) the winter and now we’re headed to balmy Toronto for the Folk Alliance International conference/festival.

I’ll be packing lots of warm socks and long undies and getting ready for that trek to the Great White North. And, I’ll possibly be rolling out some new gear this year. Canada get’s to see it first but I promise that you’ll see it all over America as well if it works out the way I hope it will. (if not, I’m sure embarrassing Youtube videos will have to be destroyed haha)

ALSO!

I lent out my drums to my pal Patrick Hoctor, did a little engineering and also tracked some one handed kick drum for his new Sulek CD “Unbound At Last”.

Sulek is Patrick Hoctor, Ruthie Hoctor and Chris Winberg.

AND!

justin heron epAfter much tracking and re-tracking and mixing and more mixing the Justin Heron ep is done and out as well. I played drums on this and I think it sounds pretty good. Justin records and mixes it old school and it shows (in the best of ways.)

OK 2013 – let’s get it on!

Double Drumming!

Well how about this? Good pal Victor DeLorenzo (do I really have to tell you that he’s the drummer extraordinaire with 1913 and Violent Femmes) has agreed to join Mike Mangione & The Union for BOTH shows tomorrow at the Steel Bridge Song Fest.

“Steel Bridge”, as we vets call it, is a very collaborative event. Many jams occur both on and off stage during the week, songwriting workshops are the norm and even a few MMTU songs were first conceived up there in Sturgeon Bay.

Still, I can’t believe how lucky I feel and how happy I am that I get to share the drum duties with Victor twice in the same day. His wizardry will no doubt leave me mystified and I’m gonna burst out laughing if he pulls out an air drum fill like I’ve seen him do in the past.

Please dear friends, take lots of pics and videos for me because I’m sure it’s going to be a blur.

(and did I ever tell you about the time a 17 year old Nez went to see the Violent Femmes and was awestruck by the tranceaphone? Well, that’s a story for another time…)
